With the summer fun comes the tanning season…but exposure to too much sun can develop skin cancer. It’s been estimated that 8,000 Americans will die from it this year & there are 62,000 new cases diagnosed in the US each year. The newer sunscreens have broader protection. Get one that blocks both UVA & UVB rays with at least SPF 15 & check the expiration date since exposure to extreme temperatures shortens the sunscreen’s life. You can’t ask vacationers to avoid the sun between 10-4 PM but it’s smart to wear a wide brimmed hat. And speaking of vacationers- they need to be warned about rip currents. These are narrow currents of water that pull swimmers away from the beach & are dangerous because swimmers try to swim directly against them & tire. Experts say the best thing to do is swim parallel to the shore till you are out of the current and then back to the beach at an angle. About 100 people die nationwide each year in rip currents. There were 2 incidents within the last month where Fripp Isl & Lady’s Isl rescuers saved swimmers on Hunting & Harbor Isl. Rip currents can happen here & being aware of what to do is the first step & stay off the sand bars!
