Hunting Island is holding is Sea Island Rotary’s Annual Adventure Biathlon on March 7th. It’s a 5-6 mile kayak and 4.5 mile trail run with 11AM registration. Participants can enter solo, form a relay or do a tandem. This is one of the best events on the coast which offers something for anyone wanting to maintain their fitness. After the awards ceremony following the race there is an off-island, off-site post race party for the participants. All profits from the race are distributed to local charities supported by Sea Island Rotary. (Call Higher Ground 379-4327 or www.active.com)
In Bft, The First Annual Bft Festiv-ALE began with a golf tournament (at the Sanctuary at Cat Island) 2/26 & continues thru Sun -with concerts, a wide selection of brews (& food venders). They expect 4,000 patrons Sat night & a cumulative attendance for all the events to surpass 10,000. March 5-8th is the Bft Chamber of Commerce annual Internation-al Film Festival (known as Kaleidoscope). According to the director Ron Tucker, “This is the most impressive group of films we have had. It includes free workshops, walking tour, special art gallery hours and a Fri Jazz concert. The 6th annual Soft Shell Crab Festival will be 4/18 in Port Royal & will be combined with the Beaufort Classic Car & Truck Show. The Showman & Fatback will perform & there will be shagging demonstrations. Of much controversy this month is the topic of the Whale Branch School. It was proposed that construction be halted (because of lack of pupils---what a silly reason!). Where a new school is sorely needed would be in the Bluffton area. Even after the Board was presented the 500+ page demographics & facilities plan there was no mind change. However-after tons of articles in EVERY newspaper, the Bft School Board refused to discontinue that construction because they estimated it would be a waste of the $19Mil they already had spent. The total cost of the school will be $35 Mil (& don’t forget the $2.5Mil/year in operating costs.) Apparently they are concerned with the drop-out rate in that area.
St Helena- the oversize Family $Store was voted in for the Corners Area next to the “Palms on the Parkway” on Rte 21. They have promised a bldg design that will conform to the Lowcountry rural setting. It will face westward toward Bft & the side of the building will face Rte 21. Dataw residents were adamantly against this....& fought long & hard & lost. It was sad to read in the 2/20 newspaper, that the local Beaufort Today is ending publication due to the tough economy & reduced advertising revenue. I thoroughly enjoyed adding this paper (& the Lady’s Island News) to my collections of readings. Then, on 2/23 I read that 2 major publications are filing for bankruptcy…. The Journal Register (New Haven) & the Philadelphia Newspapers –including the Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News. (We’re from Newtown, PA just outside of Phila.). Also, the Post & Courier of Charleston is laying off 25 workers for the same sharp decline in revenue.
