Bft News: 1) We attended the Bft High School Winter Concert Dec 3rd at St Peter’s Church. They had 2 performances that night due to REALLY inclement weather (& flooding) the previous night. There were about 60-70 singers & a newer smaller ensemble. It was a great program with a lot of variety & several excellent solos - especially a talented Madelyn Johnson. Six of us had a superb evening, ending with another great dinner at Boondocks. Next year the concert will be at the almost completed Bft High School Performing Arts Bldg. The $9.8 Mil auditorium will seat 650 & is almost completed. 2)Because of the McTeer Bridge & Rte 802 construction, the Woods Memorial swing bridge is on a new limited opening schedule. Effective Jan 11, (for Mon thru Fri) it will only open at the top of each hr from 8 - 11AM & 1 - 6 PM.(unless a tug boat w/a barge comes along). Also, at the Publix inter-section there will be an additional 500’ right turn lane….allowing those headed for St Helena to use a dedicated rt turn & 2 main lanes heading north PLUS the left turn lane already there. 3) Because of the slowdown in real estate, Bft Co has lost 1/3 of our agents – over 200 in number. “If a plant closed & left that many folks idle, there would be headlines” (according to E Ballenger in The Island News. 4) “Wide ranging discount prescription cards begin arriving in Bft Co” –from The Bft Gazette 12/14. .Seems CVS/Caremark is marketing a program offering an average discount of 22% off the retail price of some medicines. The Bft County Council voted to join this program (the county will pay $2238 annually) w/34 locations countywide accepting the cards incl: CVS, Walmart, Kmart, Walgreens, Publix & BiLo. So, I talked with Dan at BiLo where I get my medicine & found that MANY drugs don’t qualify & the savings can be used only on meds not already covered by the bearer’s insurance. On mant generic drugs the BiLo program is actually the best. 5) The Bft Co & the School Board are hiring a law firm to lobby for a state funding change according to the Gazette 12/15. It’ll cost $21,000 for 6 months – to include lobbying the state legislature & laying the foundation for possible legal action to ensure the county gets a fair share of money for public schools. The county sends $134Mil in sales-tax collections to the state but gets back nothing. 6) The 2nd annual New Year’s Day Pelican Plunge at Hunting Island is 1/1. Last year upwards of 175 people raced for the surf with the water at 53º & an estimated 500 people total came to the park that day! The event raised over $3000 for CAPA. This year donations will be raised on behalf of the Discover Carolina school program administered by the Friends of the Park. It will provide for educational learning opportunities at SC state parks.
