FI Audubon Club held its 1st Golf Cart Birding event on 4/8 with 28 participants loaded into 8 golf carts. It was a great success & fun for all. Rick Keup & Collins Strickland (FI Naturalist) put the program together. It consisted of visits to 5 different habitats thru-out the island. One of the many highlights was a chance to see Great Horned Owls in an Osprey nest complete with baby owls (in the area of the 6th fairway of Ocean Creek Golf Course). The unique birding event ended with all participants coming to the FI Nature Center for coffee & donuts & great conversation & looking forward to another trip! On 4/22, Dr Ernie Wiggers, a Certified Wildlife Biologist presented “New Opportunities for Old Rice Fields: Managing Coastal Wetlands for Wildlife at Nemours Wildlife Foundation. On 5/1 the club will take a Field Trip to Donnelley WMA to view old rice fields, salt marsh, freshwater marsh, swamp, river mudflats, mixed pine/hardwood & farmland. They hope to see spring migration & breeding birds. On 5/3 they will take another Field Trip to Webb WMA & hope to see late spring migration & breeding birds different from those on the 5/1 trip. According to Sav Now, the Jekyll Isl Authority will host the (9th Annual ) 2010 GA Coast Birding & Nature Festival 10/7-10/10 Since many migrating birds pass thru GA in Oct, the variety of birds peaks during the festival….(More than 200 different species were spotted last year. Perhaps if there is enough interest, we could rent a home on VRBO & share the costs.
