FI Audubon Club held it’s 1st Annual Xmas Bird Count on 12/19 in cold, very windy & overcast weather. The week before they had their 2nd Birding Workshop (to help with identification) under the leadership of Master Naturalist birder John Fisk & our Fripp Team Leader Rick Keup. Because these were Saturday events, we were not able to participate, but we understand that the count is particularly important for a true picture of the birdlife in this part of the Lowcountry. From our friends on Dataw we learned the number of birds sighted was down and the number of species seen was fewer than in previous years. They had 38 species and a total of 492 birds tabulated. Also, they reported no large flocks of Cedar waxwings, Robins & Yellow-rumped Warblers that would have increased the #s significantly. They did have 3 Eagles & 3 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds… I’m sure we’ll be getting our Fripp count at the next meeting Jan 28 with Ann Shahid of the SC Audubon, “That the Birds are Telling Us.” There was an interesting story in the Gazette, 12/27 on the endangered piping plovers at HHI (where they winter & dig for food). Their beach has been eroding about 150,000 cu yd of sand each year since 2006. Hopefully, a renourishment program will save their beach.
