Tennis– What a great Wimbledon show this year – the longest singles finals in Wimbledon history! The final match was so unexpectedly great between Federer and Nadal – with Nadal winning after a 9-7 game in the 5th set! Actually ALL sets were riveting. Both men played their top level game and put on a fantastic performance… Several times Federer could have won in tie-breaks & it would have been his 6th Wimbledon title but he was bested! And the women finalists – our Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, put on a great show with Venus winning. At the end of August will be the US Open and can you believe the total prize money is $20.6 Mil. The top men & women singles champions will each get $1.5 Mil. Our club here has had a tremendous turnout (thanks to Troy McMullen & his team) with the stroke of the day, roundups, drills, & clinics. Especially enjoyable have been the weekly Mon 5PM Pro Exhibitions. They’ve been having at least 50 attendees (& 85 the 4th of July week). TO make it more fun, they pull out a number and have the winner ‘perform’ for their prize –such as they need to successfully handle a forehand, backhand & overhead or 2 good serves out of 3 tries – even the children can win (& my 7½ year old grandson Jake won a Fripp Island Racquet Ball Hat which he bragged about constantly!). In turn, this shows the spectators what some of the drills cover and suggests signing up for daily classes – apparently it’s working. Our Fall clay Court Championship runs Sept 26-28th. Call 838-1504 for information. Aug 8th begins the TV coverage of the Olympic games for 2 weeks & hopefully the ‘smog’ will be gone….but that’s a whole chapter in itself! The world best young athletes will sure have more than just regular pressure & worries.
