Fripp Island’s own Pat Conroy will be inducted into the State’s Hall of Fame at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center March 18th . The State (2/17) article talks about our renowned author – who is famous for various books including “Prince of Tides,” “The Lords of Discipline,” “The Great Santini”, “The Water is Wide”, and “Beach Music” (most of which were made into movies). His newest book “South of Broad” is set for release in August and is a look at historic Charleston. Sadly, Al Sobol (age 89) passed away at the end of Jan at Bft Mem Hosp surrounded by family & friends. He earned the Bronze Star & Purple Heart for his dedicated service in WWWII. He was a retired Industrial Engineer (@ GM) & a locomotive consultant in Brazil. He was also a member of the FI Fire Dept for 25 years currently serving as the assistant fire chief. He was loved by many Fripp people and will be truly missed.
The FI Audubon Club presented a fantastic movie about the Plight of the Red Knots and the Horseshoe Crabs. These little birds are incredible-travelling nearly 20,000 miles round trip from S America to their breeding grounds in the 3 Artic. In Feb they start their trip & visit us here in the Carolinas but especially at a Delaware Bay layover where they 4 dine on eggs from the horseshoe crabs…(both of which are declining in number). Feb 26th (regular Audubon Meeting day) will be special with Tony Mills who is one of the states leading nature educators. His career has focused on plants & animals in the southeast for the past 20 years & he’s co-authored a book and appeared on many nature shows. He will introduce us to our hidden wildlife on Fripp and discuss the important role they play in our island environment. He’ll have a number of his animal “friends” with him. For March-there are 3 planned events: Birding101 workshop at the Hunting Isl Nature Center at 9AM; 3/12 Film Night-Winged Migration 7 PM; and 3/26 at 7PM “The Coast for All Seasons w/authors Miles O’Hayes & J Michel who will talk about the Carolina Coast & what we need to know about our barrier islands.
