Hilton Head: The 22 annual Verizon Heritage is coming up. The Island Packet had an article 2/10 stating that Boo Weekley will try & become the first player to win 3 consecutive titles. The tournament takes place at Harbour Town Golf Links for its 41st installment on April 13-19. He is one of 6 former champions committed to play this year-including Davis Love III, Justin Leonard, Peter Lonard, Bob Tway & Glen Day.(Love has won 5 Heritage titles). The MCI Heritage PGA Tournament 4/10-16th is the 38th annual at Harbour Town Sea Pines Resort-one of America’s premier locations. On 2/21, I read that the stumbling economy was being felt...GM will no longer provide 170 courtesy vehicles at no cost-participants will have to rent them. In the past, officials have distributed about $1.8Mil in each of the past 2 years to local charities… this year it won’t even be close. There’s a new water plant on HH – a $12Mil reverse osmosis Rx plant which will purify brackish well water to drinking water standards. They are digging deeper (600’) for a drinking water source because all HHI wells could go salty by 2020. Since 2000, the district has closed 5 or it’s 11 wells because of saltwater intrusion. They had 2 choices: buy more water or put in a system like this…and they figured it will be much cheaper than buying from BJWSA. (There are 17,000 north & mid-island customers.) Coming up is the Savannah Equestrian Exposition at Historic Rose Hill Plantation Hwy 278 (Bluffton) near HH. It will feature exciting Barrel Racing, Middleton Place Hounds, Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Quarter-mile Dash for Cash Races & a Rainbow Parade of Horses….PLUS a Polo Match. There will also be an art show and jazz music, local choral groups and other cultural activities. All profits go to charities. Also, in the Hilton Head area- I read in Beaufort Today, Five Sun City houses are to be deconstructed by Pulte Homes of SC & given to Habitat after they experienced settlement beyond the normal levels. This is the same company that just had all the truss problems costing taxpayers lots of inspection money. Hilton Head- the Island Packet is planning ‘the worlds biggest’ Yard sale 3/2/09 from 9AM to 1PM. at the HH High School at 70 Wilborn Rd. Booths are available for $50. (call 706-8190). Hilton Head has had ongoing erosion problems –especially in the area of the Port Royal Plantation. The town approved spending 11.4 M by building a rock groin & adding 550,000 cu yds of sand along the 2000’ stretch. They are seeking permits from the COE, DHEC, & OCRM
