At the end of May every year we go through the usual Hurricane Season predictions. On 5/21 we read in the Savannah AM News that there will be between 9-14 tropical storms & 4-6 of them will develop into hurricanes according to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. However, back in 1992 there were only 3 named storms but one was Andrew ..- so the number of predicted storms doesn’t mean so much - since you only need 1 to cause severe damage! Andrew made landfall in So Fla & again on the LA coast-& caused 15 deaths + $30B in property damage! You should start your preparations now so that you can be ready for ‘just-in-case.’ Three climate factors contribute to predictions -enhanced rainfall over W Africa, warmer Atlantic water & reduced wind sheer. Also, an anticipated El Nino condition in the equatorial eastern Pacific Ocean this summer could dampen hurricane activity. This El Nino correlates with Atlantic winds that push west to east, against developing storms. NOAA will update in Aug, just prior to the high typical peak hurricane activity. Here are a couple of readiness suggestions: a) have your vehicle serviced b) gather documents (deeds, SS cards, military records, bank statements, insurance, etc) & put them into small portable waterproof containers, c) determine a destination d) Make plans for pets e) check food & have water in containers f) prepare to cover windows & door openings g) replenish first aid supplies h) have at least 6 wks of prescriptions i) stock up on radios, flashlights, lantern batteries, j) secure outdoor furniture, garbage cans, tools, etc k) have extra cash & coins.
