Port Royal-good news! I’ve been pushing for development fees for the Bft school District which would help take the load off the taxes we pay. Instead of the existing (& mostly secondary) homeowners footing the bills for NEW schools, I have wanted the developers to pay (& charge their buyers) for a small portion the new school construction - because it will be their buyers who have the children who will be using the new schools that WE are paying for. Seems that the city council this month has OK’d this charge for Port Royal & Bluffton (& hopefully Bft City soon) & they are adding $6000/home - and $2.5/sq ft for commercial - to help pay for the schools. I’ve talked about this several times in past letters & am happy that the ‘voice’ is being heard. Currently, the state law allows municipalities to vote to enact impact fees on new homes for roads, libraries, parks, recreation and storm water drainage - but not for schools (the major part of our taxes).
