Hunting Island – The lighthouse was constructed in 1859. The only lighthouse in SC that is open to the public, visitors can walk the spiral staircase to get a glorious view of the Atlantic coast, & the surrounding ecology. Oct 16th starts the celebrations of the 150th yr anniv. On 10/17 is a paddlefest kayak race, sand sculpture contest & steel band beach music. On Sun 10/18 is a 5-K trail run & walk, kayaking demos, a US Coastguard demo, the Rotary Club Oyster Roast and the Lighthouse grand ceremony. They are also selling ($50 above normal fees) a special new auto license plate from Friends of Hunting Isl showing off the lighthouse, with proceeds helping the Friends organization to keep the park beautiful.
