All of the newspapers – The Gazette, Sav AM News, Charleston Post & Courier, and The State from Columbia carried the follow-up of the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo which blasted the Charleston shore around midnight 1989. There were many photos of the devastation. From there it reached up to Charlotte & many evacuees had inadvertently escaped into its path! It killed about 50 people and caused $10B in damage. The hurricane-force winds had extended out 100 miles & tropical storm winds extended up to 250 miles from the center. It’s just not imaginable to picture the Category 4 hurr-storm coastal surges approaching 20 feet. For photos, go on Google.
