One of the nicest occasions for the month was presented by the Yacht Club. They provided a FIYC Cruise to the ACE Basin on 5/22. We had a wonderful lunch at Bennett’s Point by Harold’s Catering. The trip was actually 56 miles on the water, edited by Capt Ralph Goodison on the Platoon Boat Fripper-(compliments of the Resort) and there were about 9 other boats…a large crowd. After our lunch, Lou Heyward (the Education Co-ordinator for the SC Dept of Natural Resources gave us a slide presentation on the estuary which is one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast. He talked about the ongoing research at the Bennett’s Point Research Facility. ACE is named for the Ashepoo, Edisto, & Combahee rivers which meet there at St Helena Sound. The Basin encompasses 350,000 acres – including the               1 134,710  acres that make up The Reserve. The Basin hosts a wealth of wildlife resources, including such threatened    2 species as bald eagles, wood storks, ospreys, loggerhead sea turtles, & short nose sturgeon. Besides the lecture. we were given a package with pamphlets on the Education Program, Coastal Training Program, Identifying Sharks of SC, huge Map with tons of info, Saltwater Fishes & Freshwater Fishes Charts by the DNR, and a 79-page book “The Complete Coastal Guide to Coastal Boating in South Carolina”-which was funded by the DNR, DHEC, The Dept of Natural Resources and S.C. Sea Grant Consortium. SC is currently ranked 9th in the nation in the # of registered boats. The guide provides boaters with information for mgmt practices to help ensure the preservation of the aquatic environment. On our way back from the facility, we stopped at Monkey Island (also called Morgan Island) & wanted to have ‘a chimp chat’- but none of the monkeys came to our meeting! The annual boat trip to Bull Point is coming up June 12th 10AM-2PM (reservations by 6/8 to R Combes-2 Kingfisher) @ $18/ea with Pork, Pasta, drinks, etc. In Sept is Golf Tourney & dinner.
