The Right Whale is presently active off shore of SC - (We’ve had a ‘conservation’ sign at our Marina for about a year). They were considered the ‘right whale’ to hunt thus the name-since they were rich in blubber & they were easy to catch - as relatively slow swimmers. It’s a baleen whale with a large, bow-shaped head & an arched mouth with a head that’s hairier than most whales & has callosities (horny growths) behind the blowhole & face. They have no dorsal fin & no throat grooves....but they are about 50' long and weight approx 120,000 lbs. They are seasonal feeders & eat plankton & tiny crustaceans from the water by filtering....while skimming....constantly eating. On occasion they are also bottom feeders. They are among the largest animals on earth. There used to be 10,0000 before people hunted them & they are now an endangered species with less than 300 left. Each year they migrate (Spring & Fall) from Nova Scotia to Florida & the Caribbean. Their only known calving area is off the southeastern US.
