Bft Shrimp Festival - great food, delightful music and about 10,000 people. Friday 10/5 started with a little rain but Sat was fine for the Rickey Godfrey Band & Gaslight Street, plus a 5k run. The SC Shrimper’s Assoc was selling fresh local shrimp....and the local restaurants (Emily’s., McPhearsons, Panini’s, Barbara Jean’s, Bateaux, Berry Isl Cage, Gilligans, Luther’s, Kathleen’s Plums and Nippy’s) were competing for the best shrimp dish. I do recall last year we got the same size shrimp for $5/lb & this year they were $7/lb (the 20-22/lb size - but we knew that they were local & good, so we supported the local shrimp association!). This group has been working hard to combat the effects of imported shrimp in the US. According to their Web site, local shrimpers have lost as much as 75% of their business to low-priced, pond-raised imported shrimp.

By the way, the National Geographic Adventure’s September 2007 issue featured Beaufort as a Top 50 Adventure Town. The article included a list of the best towns nationwide divided into 5 categories of wilderness, small town, mountain, waterfront and city & only listed one place for each state. Beaufort was ranked 7th in Waterfront Adventure towns.

Here are some good comments about the new San Jose Restaurant beside Walgreen’s on Lady’s Island. We had dinner there with our grandson & it was superb. I enjoyed grilled tilapia & it couldn’t have been better. Others who have eaten there said it was “very good, reasonably priced, & the restaurant clean.” It’s a family owned ‘chain’ with several restaurants in the Columbia area. Remona, daughter of the chain’s owners, is manager and she also purchased Taco Burger on Ribault Rd about 2 yrs ago & has changed that menu significantly. You’ll be delighted if you decide to eat there & your wallet will be happy too.
