The F I Audubon Club 10/26 meeting/Pot-Luck supper had an incredibly interesting speaker -Tara McGrath -of the Coastal Conservation League. This is the item on the Nov ballot (above) which we voted for....not only for a place for our birds & wildlife but because we need to be watchful for over-development proposals for St Helena Island & other Bft County areas. On 11/4 there is trip to Perry Nugent birdwalk at CawCaw Interpretive Center. The 11/16 regular monthly meeting covered a review of our Fripp Turtle program PLUS extensive pictures of this past summer’s beach re-nourishment at Hunting Island (huge equipment & barges dredging from 2 miles out!) The turtles nest basically April-Aug & we saw their tracks in the sand. The caretakers mark off the nest & cover it with mesh to protect it from animals (raccoons, etc). An average clutch (nest) can have100-125 eggs & it incubates for about 50-55 days (depending on the temperature). The hatchlings are 2" long & sometimes need help to get to the ocean. Females can lay 3-5 nests during a single season. They are 25 years old when they reach sexual maturity (large turtle is about 3' in length & 200-350 lbs).
