Penske Truck Rental Brings You Moving Tips
We have the resources and tools you need for an easy move.

When planning for a move, remember to be prepared for the time you’ll spend driving to your new home.  Penske Truck Rental, one of the nation’s leading truck rental companies, offers the following tips to help do-it-yourself movers.

  1. Make certain all potential drivers have their driver’s licenses.  Have the truck rental registration papers and insurance coverage documents readily available.  These items may be needed along the way and are important when dropping off the truck.
  2. Be sure to have specific information about mileage charges.  Local rentals (pick up and drop off at the same location) generally use a per day and per mile rental rate.  Some truck rental agreements offer unlimited mileage on one-way rentals (pick up and drop off at different locations).  Other agreements provide a limited number of free miles.  Before you investigate truck rental options, estimate the number of miles you will need to travel.  Ask the rental agent how day/mileage rates are applied.
  3. Most truck rental companies allot a certain number of days for a one-way move based on the distance of the trip.  Trucks returned late are subject to late fees.  On local moves, an additional per day charge will be applied for every day beyond the time allotted in the rental agreement.  Make sure you understand how much time you are given to make your trip.  At the time of pick up, extend your agreement if you expect your move will take extra time.
  4. It is a good idea to consider protection plans with your truck rental.  Unlike some car rentals, insurance carried on a personal vehicle usually does not cover a truck rental.  A limited damage waiver will provide coverage on the vehicle.  Personal accident/cargo insurance will provide coverage for you, your passengers and your cargo while in transit.  Ask your truck rental agent to explain the different coverage options available.
  5. Remember to budget for fuel.  A fifteen-foot truck averages about 6 to 10 miles per gallon.  If towing a car, the mileage is slightly lower.  Most truck rental companies ask that all trucks be returned with a full tank of fuel.  Filling up the tank before returning the truck is usually less expensive than paying the refueling fee charged by the rental company.
