Speaking of Charleston, there was an article in the Post & Courier 8/10 regarding the poor conditions of the InterCoastal Waterway (ICW). It seems that Congress & the Fed Gvt allowed the waterway to silt in, ignoring its own law that requires a 12-foot channel at low tide. It’s pretty bad when people are wading across! It states, “In the past 3 years, commercial traffic on the waterway has dried up even more.....Now after 6 straight years of budget cuts, the Atlantic ICW is barely more than a third the depth it should be. Unless something changes soon, the East Coast’s maritime highway could become the nautical equivalent of a dirt road, grounding $10 Billion in commercial & recreational commerce & cutting off some of Charleston’s supply of fuel, building materials & transit-boat business.” At low tides, there are spots only 4' deep. Corps officials have estimated that the 1,200 miles (from Norfolk VA to Miami FL) needs more than $100 million in work. I followed this up with a look at www.ncwaterways.com and a visit to the BOAT/US website. Boaters can now file ICW reports at www.BoatUS.com/ICW which is the first step to getting funding for maintenance
