The Audubon Club had its first meeting of the year on Oct 25th. We had another great pot luck dinner with plenty of delicious food. Pete Richardson talked of the Nature Walk Nov 1st program of the Audubon Trail & introduced Jackie Eckert who spoke of the improvements at the trail. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to commend Pete & Jackie for all their hard work over the past few months on the project & also compliment the Resort for their support of the project. After dinner, Toni Natoli showed pictures from the 2007 turtle watch program - with the turtle trails, nests, babies, etc. This was followed by Ben Ten Eyck giving a presentation of his June trip to Alaska with Jane showing photos of the birds & the glaciers & the villages, etc. Great evening!
On 11-1 we had a fantastic turnout (over 60 people) to celebrate the ‘reopening’ of the Dixie Winter Trail with Jackie Eckert who is the Naturalist from the Activity Center. Our sincere thanks to Jackie for all her hard work & to the resort who supported all her efforts. Bill Winters & 2 of Dixie’s daughters attended! Betsy & Pete Richards (whose home is on the trail) had prepared a ‘super feast’ as well as a visual presentation beyond expectations. The 2 pamphlets at the entrance of the Trail are from Jackie & Pete, and illustrate the Trail in Flora & Fauna Guides so you can take a self-guided tour which we guarantee you’ll enjoy. We should all rejoice that FRIPP has such a beautiful place and that the Club has helped to sponsor this. There are STILL things to be accomplished and the Audubon Trail is not ‘complete’ as envisioned by the Audubon Club or by Jackie. We still need flowers and a ‘more appealing entrance’ as well as several projects within the Trail and the ‘Picnic” grove at the end near the inlet. However, compared to the neglect and disintegration over the many years, this turnabout is just short of a miracle! This Xmas season, why not send a donation to the ‘F I Audubon Club’..199 Tarpon Blvd, Fripp Island, SC 29920.
