Happenings
Loggerhead Sea Turtles on our beaches June 08
By Rita RIley

The Loggerhead Sea Turtle season is here and we already have several nests. ‘Lights out’ along the beach is a requirement after 10 pm. The female Loggerhead nests once every 2-4 years (on the island where she hatched) and will lay eggs 5- 7 times per season (May-Oct) in 12-14 day cycles. Only 1 out of every 10,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood. Hatchlings usually wait until nightfall & then make their way towards the light of the moon that rests over the ocean - however they can become disoriented, dehydrated & face predators…. Lights would cause problems for them AND their moms. Peggy Blake from the Fripp Turtle program told me that we found nest #19 on June 21st. There were 119 eggs & they had to be moved (on the sand bar doesn’t work)! Last year Fripp Island only had 14 nests- so we’re well ahead of last year!
