Happenings
Savannah Theatre & Jasper Port
By Rita Riley

Savannah- Theatre buffs have requested another Fripp Trip to the Savannah Theatre like the one we had about a yr ago. The performance was a smashing success & about 28 of us went in a ‘van caravan’ to see a spectacular New York style show & then enjoyed dinner on the way home in Bft. The cost of the show is only $35 & I believe we met at the Community Centre on a Sunday at noon or 1PM – got to downtown Sav in plenty of time to have a little snack – or sit in the park – before the 3PM show. It was great fun & so the request for a repeat.  Jeanie Oliver will be helping to coordinate the group (838-7709). Everyone I’ve ever encouraged to see the reviews there has called me & THANKED me for the lead. We picked Sunday aft because you get back in plenty of time for early to bed…(during the week, their performances start at 8PM too late for many of us). So – as of now, we’re proposing Nov 8th for “AND THE BEAT GOES ON.  You will really enjoy it. Haven’t yet decided on where to have dinner ..(suggestions, please… Boonddocks? San Jose?) The theatre is in the historic Bull Street building which was designed by renown architect Wm Jay & opened in 1818.         The Sav AM News reported 9/21 that Gov Perdue issued a ‘state of emergency’ for 17 counties in GA due to the flooding. Also, the GA DOT had closed several interstate hiways.                   Speaking of GA, Gov Perdue lead a state delegation including GA Port Auth & GA Dept of Economic Dev. to Panama to discuss the Panama Canal expansion & the proposed Sav Harbor expansion project - & also meet with Maersk - their biggest port customer. (He didn’t include any of our SC Jasper Port execs).  He actually phoned GA & SC newspapers from Panama, pushing once again for approval to deepen the harbor from 42’ to 46.’Seems he’s more interested in keeping 100% of the business for GA & not sharing a part of the proceeds with SC at the proposed Jasper Terminal.        Yet, on 9/9 & 9/11, the Sav AM News had articles about the proposed Jasper Ocean Terminal which will feature 10 berths, a turning basin & road & rail infrastructure on approx 1000-1100 acres in Jasper. There was a detailed rendering of what the deepwater      port might actually look like. (When completely built out, the terminal will have a capacity of 7Million 20’ containers). Originally it will only have 2 of the    2

10 berths. The delay so far is the US Army Corp of Eng (COE) who “informed us that they had insufficient funding to    3 pay for staff team to review the feasibility study we’ve completed.” Also, & importantly, the COE is presently using part of the site for dredging disposal….& have a perpetual easement on the property.
