Fripp Island Fishing in the LowCountry & Tournaments
By Rita Riley

Fishing  A good number of our crabs have apparently left our canal. We haven’t had our usual 1-2 dinners/wk for over a month! Even the spots & flounder are down. On July12th the Fireworks Fishing Tournament turn-out was only 6 boats (they’d expected 20)- rough water had been expected yet the weather turned nice… Hamp Manning with “Sweet Deal” (from Augusta, GA) won-& was almost late for the weigh in! He caught a 30 lb Kingfish – he also won for the Dolphin category with a 9.1 lb. The boat burned 110 gal of diesel (at about $5/gal) & the entry fee was $250. Lucky for him the winnings were $550 for the king & $450 for the dolphin. The next tournament is the Kingfish Invitational on Aug 31st.                                                                                  According to the Island Packet 7/27, seems that some fish populations may be dropping & federal law requires the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council to create laws to rebuild depleted stocks. To end over-fishing, the council has proposed new rules that include catch limits & fishery closures. Under scrutiny are red snapper (which has been plentiful this year) and grouper (which has been down for several years). To view the proposed rules, go to www.safmc.net or to comment send an e-mail to SGAmend16Second PH@safmc.net. The hearing is scheduled for 8/12 at the Hilton Garden Inn Airport in N Charleston.       Our 18th annual Kingfish Invitational is 8/29-30-call the Marina for info 838-1517.
