Hunting Island
By Rita Riley

took my grand children (ages 6 & 8) to Hunting Island Nature Center last week & want to recommend it to all. We found a time when it was not busy, so a Ranger there took out a snake (longer than 4') and two of the turtles for the kids to pet. For them, this was SO exciting! Then we got to see the new extension (about 25'x25' or larger), which will be a classroom when the floors & cabinets get completed. We learned that they had some extra beach erosion this month (mostly at the cabin areas) -but they usually lose 30'/year. Their 62 turtle nests were all about done (except maybe one -which was flooded during the 2 storms & high tides we’ve had). After the 2 tropical storms passed east of here on Fripp, we also had erosion of some of our dunes - most noticeable to me at the Seahorse-thru-SwordFish areas. It was on the weekend of the 9th-10th that we had high tides at 8' - and at the same time the storm was out in the Atlantic passing here with some surge. We were shocked on Sunday morning when we parked at Rock Beauty to find the beach goers all huddled near the access parking since there was only a few feet not under water. My daughter Loretta & I took a walk thru the water towards the CJFVillas & Beach Club to find those access steps half under water (!) and then down the other way to Seahorse to see the places where dunes sand was gone. Walking in the water at that time was quite different from the usual hard-packed that we’re used to... Each footstep was sinking an inch or 2 & it felt like quicksand! On Oct 6-10th we are due another 8+ foot tide, so let’s hope that another storm doesn’t come breezing by.
