Hunting Island & Hunting Island State Park
By Rita Riley

Hunting Island – the most popular of all 47  SC State Parks - w/over 1.5 Mil people visiting yearly. At their nature center are classes on alligators, fish printing, crabbing, salt marsh kayaking, reptiles, pier fishing, sea turtles, & the lighthouse tour. According to articles in the Bft Gazette 7/17 & 7/24, the shoreline erosion at the south end has made Cabin Road impassable & prompted Bft Co officials to issue a mandatory evacuation for 12 homes there. County crews would not be able to respond to an emergency in a reasonable amount of time if needed. Leaseholders were sent certified letters. A home still connected to utilities (elec) fell into the ocean last week & the other homes are threatened by advancing water. Chuck & I biked over there from Fripp about 3 weeks ago & it looked pretty bad with trees & debris all over, & no roads.                                                                                                                                                                                          1
