PSD news - water - sewer- fire dept - health
By Rita Riley
Happenings are the PSD meting for May.The PSD meeting 5/13. Topics included: 1) the Mgr’s Report which was routine with a note being made to the water consumption-which was down about 26% from the previous year. Earmie remarked that it’s been a little cooler & also that we’ve had a shortage of rain (even though we recently got 2 rather heavy-but short-downpours). Seems that most of the lawn sprinkler systems on the island are just now coming on; 2) Jim Parks brought us up-to-date on the engineers visit when Hussey Gay Bell (HGB) inspected the bearing plates on the bridge. To date we have not received any news from the Core of Engineers or the Hunting Isl officials on their proposed sand ‘borrowing’ at a shoal near our inlet bridge; 3) Gary Bonds presented the proposed Draft of the Budget; 4) The fire dept report was routine + they purchased a jet ski needed for rescue at a cost of $9000; 5) Wastewater treatment plant doing well & PSD’s from Isle of Palms, Mt Pleasant, etc. are looking at it as a model. We have the first SC “MBR plant” which is the newest technology membrane at OUR sewer plant. By the way, confederate Jasmine has been planted to ‘landscape’ the sewer plant. 6) the expense of almost $25,000 was necessary (& working well) for the bio filter for odor control at the central vacuum station (center island - at the PSD & fire dept bldgs); 7) The PSD approved the early redemption of the Fire Station Bond prior to its maturity (a $657,500 Gen Obligation Bond). It will save the Fripp taxpayers $23,000 in interest. Since the interest rate @ 3.97% is higher than the int earned on invested funds that has dropped to 3%, it was wise to pay off the bond. 8) Verizon Wireless leased space on the water tower (for your cell phones) 9) Under new business, the Fiscal year 2009 water & sewer rates are not increasing! The June 10th meeting will be a public meeting for approving the budget & a regular PSD meeting. The proposed Fiscal Year 2009 Budgets are 38 pages long– anyone wanting a copy before the June public meeting should contact Mr Wilson, Mgr @ 838-2400. The PSD is responsible for our water supply, wastewater collection & treatment, fire protection, erosion control & maintenance of the Inlet Bridge. The 6-member commission establishes policies & procedures, approves the budget, & adopts the rates & tax levies to cover the operations. There are 4 seats up for election this year (with voting on 11/4). To qualify you must be a primary owner & file a statement of Candidacy with the Bft Co Board of Elections & Voter Registration…(by 8/15/08). Just stop by the PSD building (next to the fire station) & they’ll help you. It’s a big commitment but very satisfying.
