Resort Club Board Meeting - May 08
By Rita Riley
The CAB –Resort meeting-5/19. Items discussed incl 1) the Fitness center & the problems with county approval for the move to the larger facility near the entrance of the island. The county classification ‘interpretation’ of the Fitness Center seems to be one which would encompass bleachers & an exhibition -when in reality we have private non-spectator exer-cising on a limited # of machines! When this is resolved, the move can be made quickly. 2) Ocean Point pool hours will be 9-7 PM (request had been for 8AM)-however, the cleaning process of the pools needs the 9AM opening. 3) The pop-corn machine was approved. 4) A program for supplying fried chicken to the Marina has been installed (for boaters). 5) the issue of gater signs was discussed (& how many & where & the liability involved). It was initially suggested that they be installed at the pond/lagoon at Marlin-Dolphin & at the lagoon across from Davis Love Park (because this is where they are most often seen from the road). However, there have been gator encounters when bikers, dog-walkers, & people with children strayed into the pvt golf areas! 6) Food & beverage was discussed & the consistency at the Boathouse still leaves room for improvement. There were 90 reservations for Mother’s Day -the food & service was excellent. There will be Father’s Day Specials on June 15th. The Food Court has extended hours & is doing well (except for a pizza-wait when too many are ordered!). 7) The Club Membership is doing well. Several members switched to full-time from social because they had limited (14 day) amenity card rental with the social. 8) As for Golf – the Member/Guest tourney went well. Also, the Charities Tourney the 16th-18th went well & Barbara Jeans provided excellent food for Sat.evening. 8) I became aware that the Club has been giving out a package with the amenity cards. Included with their cards was a very nice folder, which contained an Island map, the monthly calendar of events & the entertainment schedule for the month (for the Sand Bar & Sports Bar), plus over a dozen nice fliers for Camp Fripp, Island Excursion Rentals, Dining Options & phone numbers, the Marina info, the Tennis Club, Ocean Point & Ocean Creek golf courses & phone numbers, Wee Links Golf, Nature Programs, Turtle Facts, Nature Cruise, The Photo Contest, & a feedback form requesting the persons name & address (to go into the Fripp data base for publicity mailings which I did not like). Also, there was a very attractive, large (9x12) 37-page Fripp Island booklet which had some of the nicest pages I’ve ever seen on Fripp Island both in what it detailed & in photography. It also had (from Pgs 24-34) photo ads for their 156 rental properties & a page on the reasons for renting from them - such as the preferred rates for golf, charging privileges-discounts-& other benefits & complimentary access & ‘preferred reservations’, etc.. & “providing all the more reason to book your reservations exclusively with us.” Though this booklet is quite professional & appealing, I specifically requested that it NOT be included in with MY amenity card packages for MY private guests. Don’t get me wrong – I strongly push the amenity cards to our rental guests & want them to enjoy OUR restaurants & OUR functions here on the island. BUT, the rental section has me strangely feeling like I’ve been taken advantage of.
